Sinusitis
Sinusitis is when the tissue lining the sinuses become swollen or inflamed. It occurs as the result of an inflammatory reaction or an infection from a virus, bacteria or fungus.
Types of Sinusitis:
Acute Sinusitis is when symptoms are present for 4 weeks or less. It is caused by bacteria growing in the sinuses.
Sub-acute sinusitis is when the swelling is present between one to 3 months.
Chronic Sinusitis is when the swelling of the sinuses is present for longer than 3 months. It may be caused by bacteria or a fungus.
There are 4 different pairs of sinuses:
Frontal Sinuses: The right and left frontal sinuses are located over and around your eyes. Specifically they are situated near the center of your forehead. Just above each eyes.
Maxillary Sinuses: The Maxillary sinuses are the largest of the sinuses. They are positioned behind your cheek bone near your maxillary or upper jaw.
Sphenoid Sinuses: The Sphenoid sinuses are located behind your skull, near your optic nerve and pituitary gland.
Ethmoid Sinuses: These sinuses are situated between your eyes and the bridge of your nose. Ethmoid sinuses consist of a collection of 6 to 12 air cells that open into your nasal passage.
Signs and Symptoms:
Causes:
The Sinuses are air filled spaces in the skull. They are located behind the forehead, nasal bone, cheeks, and eyes. Healthy Sinus contain no bacteria or other guns. The mucus is able to drain out and air is able to flow through the sinuses.
When the sinus opening become blocked or too much mucus builds up, bacteria and other gums can grow more easily.
Cold and allergy may cause too much mucus to be made or block the opening of the sinuses. A deviated nasal septum, nasal bone spur, or nasal polyp may block the opening of the sinuses
